Pollution
by Lynda Dodsworth

Pollution by Lynda Dodsworth, a photograph of a glass head on Dawdon beach, is a continuation of Lynda’s work on the post industrial clean up of the Durham beaches.

Dawdon ironworks and the nearby coalmines of the area created lots of pollution from chimneystacks and waste. Clinker waste from the ironworks was dumped over the cliff tops down onto the beaches below where traces of iron reacted with the sea causing the rocks, sand and mud to turn vivid shades of red, orange through to yellow.

“The glass head forms a landscape profile against this strange but beautiful beach. I call it my toxic beach.”
